Where Character Counts!

Will Eastes grew up in Garrett and attended GHS, he lettered in all sports and was active in student programs.  He later graduated from Purdue University with a BSEE plus graduate courses in advanced calculus and physics.  He spent his spare time working, starting at 12 in the Garrett movie theater and ended up in college working evenings in RCA's off-campus microwave test lab. 

He has been a scientist, design engineer, manager, program manager, director and executive manager with state licenses as a professional engineer.  His career has all been in aerospace.  For example, he was responsible for the altimeter used on NASA lunar landing modules and now the USAF standard. 

Art Warner credits his GHS teachers for starting his academic path.  Thanks to the G.I. Bill, Art earned three degrees in seven years at Indiana University.  His career began as a professor at MSU, included being Dean of the College of Business at the University of Tennessee and American University, and he retired as an endowed professor at the University of South Carolina.  

Art was a lifelong scholar and educator and a well-rounded man.  He was married to his high school sweetheart for 71 years, had four children, and was a world traveler, a scratch golfer and an adoring grandfather.

Roger Dean Weimer graduated with the GHS class of 1955, where he was a major player on all the athletic teams while spending summers working, on year on the B&O section gang laying track.  

Roger earned degrees from Manchester and Saint Francis colleges, and completed a sixth year to qualify for his administrator's license.  He served 36 years in education in many positions in several northeast Indiana schools.  He considered coaching the Railroader basketball team to two sectional and regional championships ('71 and '72) and serving as principal of Garrett High school to be among the highlights of his career. 

Warrant Officer 1, helicopter pilot, Nathan Wilondek is being recognized for heroism, while participating in an aerial flight on August 18, 1969.  As a UH-1 Helicopter Commander, he voluntarily conducted an ammunition resupply mission in the Song Chang Valley east of Hiep Due in the Republic of Vietnam.  Nathan knowingly piloted his aircraft into effective enemy fire without gunship cover.  Despite his aircraft sustaining multiple hits, Warrant Officer 1 Wilondek painted his position until the critical ammunition could be offloaded and supplied to the soldiers on the ground.  

His courageous and timely actions were instrumental in saving a company-sized element from being overrun and contributed to the overall success of their mission.  Warrant Officer 1 Wilondek's distinctive accomplishments are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 71st Aviation Company and the United States Army.

After high school and aviator school, Nathan went to work for the B&O Railroad in Garrett.  Later, while residing in Garrett, he owned and operated two retail stores.  Now that he is retired, Nathan spends a lot of his time hunting, fishing, playing golf, and watching grandchildren participate in sports.
